TARA SAGE
BA Visual Arts, GradDipEd

Tara Sage is a Canadian Australian artist whose work explores the calming strength of the sea. Her paintings focus on early morning light, quiet horizons, and the subtle shifts between sky and water. Through layers of brushwork and palette knife texture, she creates seascapes that offer a moment of stillness and a sense of spacious possibility.

Raised in Alberta in a family of generational female artists, Tara grew up surrounded by creative practice and an appreciation for natural beauty. She later lived in six countries, including many years in Australia, where the coastline became a central source of inspiration. The open water, the clarity of sunrise, and the feeling of standing before an uninterrupted horizon continue to guide her work today.

Tara completed a Bachelor of Arts in Visual Arts and a Graduate Diploma in Education. She exhibited in Australia, received recognition as a Bluethumb Featured Artist, and participated in major art shows. In 2024 she relocated to Ohio, where she continues her studio practice and prepares new work for galleries and collectors.

Tara’s paintings aim to create a quiet emotional connection with nature. By removing the presence of figures, she invites viewers to engage directly with the landscape and to experience a sense of calm, reflection, and gentle optimism. Each piece is designed to offer a visual pause, a point of rest in a busy world.

Tara’s work is held in private collections in Australia, Canada, the United States, and Europe, and is installed in a number of professional spaces in the US and Australia.

Artist Statement

My work explores the quiet strength and restorative presence of the sea. I am drawn to the moments when sky and water meet in gentle transition, when early morning light softens the horizon and creates space for reflection. These scenes offer a sense of calm that I aim to carry into each painting.

Using brushes and palette knife, I build layers of texture and atmosphere. I focus on subtle shifts in colour, the movement of clouds, and the reflective surface of water. I avoid the presence of figures so the viewer may engage directly with the landscape and experience an uninterrupted connection with the scene.

The sea has been a consistent source of grounding throughout my life, shaped by years of living near coastlines and by a personal search for clarity, openness, and solitude. In my practice I return to the horizon as a symbol of possibility. I seek to create paintings that offer a moment of pause and a place for quiet contemplation.
